AI took center stage at the eClinicalWorks National Conference, leveraged as a tool to increase efficiency, and enhance accuracy across clinical, administrative and revenue cycle management functions. New AI Features in eClinicalWorks
eClinicalWorks has introduced significant advancements in AI capabilities to further support providers and staff, ultimately increasing user satisfaction with the system:
- Ambient Listening – The eClinicalWorks Sunoh.ai platform, which currently can listen to 15 languages and process multi-party conversations, provides great support to providers during patient encounters. Based on those conversations, it has the power to generate and recommend codes for review and acceptance, enter orders into the patient record, and document procedures. It can even manage sequential interactions into one summarized note, starting with a nurse’s intake and continuing through the provider encounter. Finally, ambient listening can provide documentation for ambulatory surgery center encounters.
- Smart Glasses – Wearable eyewear now interacts with Sunoh.ai, acting as a user interface to help clinicians. They support the listen and transcribe function, generating draft documentation and suggested coding, along with a heads-up view to display relevant patient data information prompted by the conversation. This could include labs and medications, or even a trendline from previous encounters.
- Value-Based Care – New features in eClinicalWorks further the system’s ability to support various patient populations. Modules for Advanced Primary Care Models, Chronic Care Management, Transition Care Management, Care Plan Oversight, and Remote Patient monitoring help healthcare organizations manage populations with chronic conditions.
eClinicalWorks AI and Usability Enhancements
At the 2024 eClinicalWorks National Conference, a number of AI features were rolled out that have now been enhanced through the most recent versions of the system. These build upon useful functionality to further the system’s capabilities and simplify the user experience:
- Prisma Healow Plus – Pharmacy coupons and cost saving opportunities are now available for patients. Providers are prompted when applicable discounts are valid.
- Closed Loop Referral – This is now provided in eClinicalWorks to digitally track every patient referral made by a provider from start to finish. The system provides this through its interoperability framework and internal tracking and tasking tools.
- Usability Enhancements – In addition to the flat design which reduces screen-to-screen navigation and reduces memory footprint, eClinicalWorks has enhanced its user experience with features such as facial recognition with eClinicalTouch, eCW Smart University content, and an RCM dashboard.
- Specialty Enhancements – Key specialties may now experience time-saving features, as well as those which improve accuracy.
- For pediatrics, age and gender-based templates reduce the number of options to choose from, and toggles are available for visits where multiple siblings are receiving care.
- In obstetrics, providers will experience a flat panel interface, a new set of short cuts, electronic prior authorization for medications, and PDMP enhancements to ensure medications are meeting care requirements.
- Electronic Medication Administration Record Enhancements – This digital tool to track, verify and document the administration of medications to patients now integrates with pharmacy inventory to monitor stock levels.
- Lab Integration – Lab results are now entered into the eClinicalWorks patient record. In addition, a new Prior Authorization indicator on the lab and Diagnostic Imaging screens displays the Medicare prior authorizations. Requests will be sent to the payer, and prompts will appear if payers require additional information, and requested information will be automatically sent.
- Visit Summary Transcription Enhancements – Visit summaries are now available in Spanish and eight additional languages.
Planning for AI Activation
As with every feature that’s been introduced in updates and new versions of eClinicalWorks, the Ero Health team has always shared a key piece of advice: have a strategy in place before you enable new features, and don’t turn them on all at once.
Consider this example: A healthcare organization is eager to reap the benefits of ambient listening. Perhaps they’ve seen a demo or informed themselves through research.
